Geotechnical Engineering | Construction Materials Testing
Position Overview
Zannino Engineering is seeking an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to support geotechnical engineering services and construction materials testing projects throughout Richmond and Central Virginia. Based in Richmond, VA, this position works closely with licensed Professional Engineers (PEs), project managers, and field technicians on both public and private sector projects.
This role is ideal for a motivated early-career engineer seeking hands-on experience in field investigations, laboratory testing, engineering analysis, report preparation, and client coordination while progressing toward Professional
Key Responsibilities
- Support geotechnical engineering investigations including subsurface explorations and soil evaluations
- Perform and observe field testing for soils, concrete, and masonry
- Assist with special inspections and third-party inspection services
- Review field reports, test data, and laboratory results for accuracy and completeness
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical memoranda, and draft reports under PE supervision
- Coordinate with field technicians, laboratory staff, project managers, and clients
- Assist with project scheduling, documentation, and quality control
- Comply with company procedures, safety requirements, and professional standards
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- Engineer In Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe
- Entry-level to three years of relevant engineering or construction-related experience
- Valid driver’s license with a positive driving record
- Ability to perform field work and lift materials up to 50 pounds as needed
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
Preferred Experience
- Prior experience in geotechnical engineering or construction materials testing
- Familiarity with laboratory and field testing procedures
- Exposure to construction plans, specifications, and technical reports
- Experience working on active construction sites
Performance Expectations (Early KPIs)
With training and supervision, the EIT is expected to achieve the following:
- Independently perform basic field observations and testing oversight within 30 days
- Accurately review and compile field and laboratory data within 60 days
- Prepare draft engineering calculations and reports within 90 days
- Demonstrate consistent understanding of company standards, testing procedures, and reporting requirements
- Progress toward PE licensure in accordance with state requirements

Compensation
Salary Range: $50,000–$65,000 per year
Compensation is based on experience, certifications, education, and other job-related qualifications.
