Testing the materials beneath a project is just as important – and sometimes even more important – than the work above it.
At Zannino Engineering, our AASHTO-accredited laboratory supports a wide range of testing needs for projects of every size. Whether it’s a high-volume commercial development or a smaller, personalized job, our lab staff brings experience and attention to detail to every sample.
What We Test in the Lab
We test soils, fine and coarse aggregates (sand and stone), and other construction materials to ensure they meet project requirements. Our work follows established ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials) standards for moisture content, soil consistency, compaction, and aggregate sizing.
What Soil Testing in the Lab Tells Us
- Moisture content → Is the soil too wet or too dry to perform properly?
- Soil consistency → How stable is it under pressure? Will it shrink, swell, or deform?
- Compaction → Can it be densified enough to safely support weight?
- Aggregate sizing → Are the sand and stone particles properly graded for strength and drainage?
Quality Control and Accreditation
To keep our performance at its best, we also regularly participate in AASHTO re:source proficiency testing. This process compares our lab’s accuracy against other participating laboratories and confirms our testing methods remain compliant with industry practices.
By verifying materials before they are used in the field, our lab enables engineers, contractors, and owners to make informed decisions, reduce risk, and keep construction moving confidently.
