Staff Engineer (EIT)

Zannino Engineering Inc. has an immediate opening for someone who wants to make an impact on the quality of development and construction. We provide designers, owners and the general public the confidence that their facilities have been built with excellence.

The successful candidate will be given hands-on training by seasoned in-house professional engineers as well as continuing education seminars from nationally accredited agencies like ASCE, NSPE and professional trades. The goal is to prepare the candidate to obtain professional registration and become an active project engineer. Training will begin on construction materials testing projects for new construction sites in Central Virginia or the Tidewater area. Testing will primarily be performed on soil, concrete and masonry materials and may be expanded to include asphalt, structural steel and Exterior Insulation & Finishes Systems EIFS. Once training is completed for construction materials projects, training will begin for residential and commercial geotechnical studies. The training will prepare the engineer to collect field data from hand auger and drill rig studies and prepare boring logs for reports. The candidate will also be cross-trained to perform laboratory testing needed to support reports. The engineer will learn how to perform engineering calculations to evaluate soil bearing capacity, settlement, earth pressures and pavement design for geotechnical reports.

Requirements of the position include accurate documentation of field activities, detailed review of project plans and specifications and exact implementation of ASTM testing methods. The candidate must have a bachelor of science in civil engineering and passed the EIT examination and an educational background in engineering with soil mechanics and materials science is desired. Hands on training will be provided for all assignments with the following expectations.

  1. a) Competently performing construction field testing un-assisted – 4 weeks
  2. b) Gathering field & lab data for residential and commercial soil studies – 2 weeks
  3. c) Preparing documentation for inclusion into soil reports – 2 weeks
  4. d) Performing analysis and preparing reports for PE review – 30 days
  5. e) Performing residential footing/foundation inspections – 5 days
  6. f) Using design software for reinforced earth walls – 30 days
  7. g) Preparing commercial geotechnical reports for PE review – 90 days
