Deep excavations can change how the ground behaves.
Why Deep Excavations Need Support
Some construction projects require work to take place far below ground level. Utility installations, pump stations, deep foundations, underground structures, and major infrastructure repairs often require excavations that can extend dozens of feet below the surface. As excavations become deeper, the surrounding soil must be supported so work can continue safely.
- Sheeting refers to the structural elements installed around an excavation to hold back the surrounding soil and create a stable excavation.
- Shoring is the overall system of braces, anchors, or other supports that stabilizes the sheeting and resists the pressure of the surrounding earth. Together, these systems create a safe work area below grade while construction takes place.
In most projects, sheeting and shoring are temporary systems. Once the permanent structure is complete and capable of supporting the surrounding ground, the temporary support system is removed or decommissioned as part of the construction process.
Designing the Right Support System
Every excavation is different. The appropriate support system depends on factors such as:
- soil and rock conditions
- groundwater levels
- excavation depth
- nearby buildings, utilities, and roadways
- construction methods
At Zannino Engineering, we design and monitor temporary shoring systems that allow contractors to work safely in excavations as deep as 55 feet. Our experience spans a wide range of geologic conditions, from residual soils and bedrock to cofferdams along waterways.
Managing Groundwater
Many deep excavations also require temporary dewatering systems to control groundwater so excavation and construction can proceed safely and efficiently.
From Concept to Construction
During the bidding phase, we provide specialty contractors with preliminary shoring concepts and cost estimates, followed by final design drawings that support safe, practical, and cost-effective construction.
By stabilizing the ground during excavation, sheeting and shoring systems help protect workers, nearby infrastructure, and adjacent property while allowing complex construction projects to move forward safely and efficiently.
