Field Technician | Construction Materials Testing & Inspections
Position Overview
Zannino Engineering is seeking an Engineering Technician – Level I to support geotechnical engineering investigations, residential foundation and footing inspections, and commercial construction materials testing. This is a field-based position focused on third-party and special inspections on active construction sites throughout Central Virginia.
This role is well suited for someone who enjoys hands-on work, learning technical procedures, and working as part of a professional inspection and testing team.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform field testing of construction materials including concrete, soils, and masonry
- Support engineering soil studies and residential foundation and footing inspections
- Assist with laboratory testing of soils and concrete as needed
- Accurately document field observations, test results, and daily reports
- Communicate professionally with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients
- Follow established testing procedures, safety requirements, and company standards
Minimum Qualifications
- Entry-level to one year of experience in construction materials testing or related construction work
- High school diploma or GED required
- Valid driver’s license with a positive driving record
- Ability to lift and handle materials weighing up to 80 pounds
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
Preferred Experience
- Previous construction or inspection-related field experience
- Exposure to reading construction plans and specifications
- Familiarity with field documentation and report writing
Performance Expectations (Early KPIs)
Successful candidates are expected to progress toward the following milestones with training and supervision:
- Perform concrete field testing independently within one week
- Perform soil field testing independently within one week
- Perform masonry field testing independently within two weeks
- Assist with soil laboratory testing within 30 days
- Assist with concrete laboratory testing within one week
- Obtain ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification within 90 days or next available testing windows
- Obtain VDOT Soils Field Technician I certification within 90 days or next available testing window
