Field Technician | Construction Materials Testing & Inspections

Position Overview

Zannino Engineering is seeking an Engineering Technician – Level I to support geotechnical engineering investigations, residential foundation and footing inspections, and commercial construction materials testing. This is a field-based position focused on third-party and special inspections on active construction sites throughout Central Virginia.

This role is well suited for someone who enjoys hands-on work, learning technical procedures, and working as part of a professional inspection and testing team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform field testing of construction materials including concrete, soils, and masonry
  • Support engineering soil studies and residential foundation and footing inspections
  • Assist with laboratory testing of soils and concrete as needed
  • Accurately document field observations, test results, and daily reports
  • Communicate professionally with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients
  • Follow established testing procedures, safety requirements, and company standards

Minimum Qualifications

  • Entry-level to one year of experience in construction materials testing or related construction work
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Valid driver’s license with a positive driving record
  • Ability to lift and handle materials weighing up to 80 pounds
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel

Preferred Experience

  • Previous construction or inspection-related field experience
  • Exposure to reading construction plans and specifications
  • Familiarity with field documentation and report writing

Performance Expectations (Early KPIs)

Successful candidates are expected to progress toward the following milestones with training and supervision:

  • Perform concrete field testing independently within one week
  • Perform soil field testing independently within one week
  • Perform masonry field testing independently within two weeks
  • Assist with soil laboratory testing within 30 days
  • Assist with concrete laboratory testing within one week
  • Obtain ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification within 90 days or next available testing windows
  • Obtain VDOT Soils Field Technician I certification within 90 days or next available testing window
