From the Ground Up: Subsurface Investigations

What’s Beneath the Surface

Subsurface Investigations

Before any structure can rise, its success depends on what lies beneath.

A solid understanding of subsurface conditions can make the difference between a project that stays on schedule, and one that doesn’t.

At Zannino Engineering, our subsurface investigations use drilling, sampling, and in-situ (on-site) testing to reveal the soil and rock conditions at a site. Depending on the project, that can include traditional soil borings (to see how soil changes with depth), Standard Penetration Tests (which is an indicator of soil bearing capacity), or advanced methods such as Cone Penetration or Pressuremeter Tests (which provide detailed information on soil strength and stiffness).

These tests help determine the bearing capacity, or how much weight the ground can safely support, so we can design foundations that are both safe and cost-effective.

Our experienced field crews work alongside engineers and geologists to ensure accurate data collection, because reliable results begin with reliable measurements. This information forms the foundation for sound engineering recommendations and informed design decisions.

By understanding the ground before construction begins, we help owners, architects, and contractors avoid costly surprises, reduce risk, and build with confidence on solid footing.
