From the Ground Up: Reinforcing Steel Inspections

Much of a structure’s strength is hidden before the concrete or masonry is placed.
What Happens Before Concrete Is Placed
Before concrete or grout is placed, reinforcing steel must be installed exactly as designed. This step happens later in pre-placement preparation, but early enough that corrections can still be made. Once concrete or masonry is placed, that steel is no longer visible, but it plays a critical role in how the structure performs.
That’s when we’re on site.
Inspection During Construction
We perform reinforcing steel inspections to verify that installed reinforcement matches the approved plans and details. Our inspections include checking the size and number of bars, spacing, splice lengths, and clearances in footings, slabs, and other cast-in-place concrete elements. We also inspect reinforcing steel placed within the cells of concrete masonry units (CMUs) before grout is placed. Concrete and grout are strong in compression, but weak in tension, so steel reinforcement is placed to give reinforced concrete the tension / bending strength to act as beams, columns, and other flexural members.
Why Reinforcement Matters
These checks confirm that the steel is positioned to do its job once the concrete or grout hardens. Properly placed reinforcement helps carry loads, control cracking, and ensure the structure performs as intended over time.
If this step is missed or if you are looking at an older structure, reinforcing steel can be verified after the concrete or masonry is already in place. When that happens, we can locate steel within completed elements using an electromagnetic reinforcing steel finder. This allows verification of bar location and spacing without damaging the structure.
Verifying What’s Hidden
By confirming reinforcing steel before it’s covered and locating it when needed later, we help ensure that what’s hidden inside the concrete aligns or masonry with the design assumptions made on paper. That clarity supports safer construction, reduces uncertainty, and helps projects move forward with confidence.
